Vacations are chances to make memories away from the daily grind of everyday life. Living on a farm creates great learning experiences, but so do experiences away from the farm. I’m all about getting away and creating those vacation memories too.
The major challenge of being married to a concrete construction business owner/grain farmer is March through December is out of the question when it comes to traveling, so my Mother-in-Law usually joins the boys and I on our trips. Not to worry though, we do travel between Christmas and New Years sometimes to have that family vacation experience.
So far we’ve been to Destin, FL, Coco Beach, FL, and recently Hilton Head Island, SC. I love taking my farm boys to the beach and they love it too. Experiencing places other than farm country is something I think is important. During the winter months, when our Farmer can join us, we’ve been to Orlando, FL, Indianapolis, IN, Branson, MO, and Lake of the Ozarks, MO.
Its so cool to see the boys experience surroundings other than pastures, fields, barns, and farm equipment. I was surprised the first time I took them to the beach. They jumped right in and didn’t want to leave. Granted most kids are like that when it comes to water anywhere, but I wasn’t sure how they would react.
After this last vacation to Hilton Head Island, SC the boys loved it so much they want to go back in the future. I’m looking forward to creating another vacation memory with them in a few years. Next stop a Disney Cruise in our 2013 Spring Break. Can’t wait!
Where does your family like to vacation?

I just took a vacation to the country and had the opposite experience. It felt so nice to see all of the farms that I’ve missed because I’ve lived downtown in a big city for the past five years. I need to do more vacationing in farm country. You and your boys are so lucky!
