So true! I worked at Fernald, too, from 1982 to 1995. When I started there under NLO, in the lab, I thought I would work there until April 2023 (my projected retirement date). We had such a great family atmosphere there that I was blessed to appreciate it even at the time. I have not experienced it since. My co-workers took me under their wings: we watched out for each other, The phrase "I have your back" didn't mean they were looking where to put the knife. It has only been this past year when I started working at a Huntington Learning Center that I began to enjoy such a working environment again.

It was at Fernald that I learned how to look out for others and how to be a good mentor. Under Westinghouse, for example, we had a great "Partnership in Education" program where we went into the local schools and talked to the local kids about science. I learned the importance of the relationship between business and education in the community. Westinghouse also had formalized mentoring and professional development programs to help woman and young professionals become better at what they were doing. Fluor was assertive about helping you be better at what you were doing or helping you find something else to do. I really respected that.

These days, the trend is to not stay at one job long enough to really develop a family relationship with one's co-workers. But the atmosphere can still be a much healthier, friendlier, constructive one than what some people are finding. You and I were both lucky in finding such an atmosphere at the same place.

Great post!

I think buying from a farmer's market is great, but it's also important to note that neither Lean Finely Textured Beef nor the "mad cow disease" posed a threat to human health.

I love farmers markets because you get the best price, get to support your local community and get what's in season. Total win, win :-)

I learned something I already knew...people should treat animals kindly, especially when they are essentially working for you. I assume that these cows are for milking and not beef, otherwise this cow massage story sure wouldn't have a happy ending!
