We all know someone, mainly a family member, that is hard to buy for when holidays come around or even their birthday. It’s nothing less than a challenge to buy them something or come up with a unique gift that would make them feel special. I challenge myself every year for those exact type of people and here are some ideas I’ve come up with:
For my Grandmother who has 11 grandkids and 12 great grandkids a lot of my ideas have centered around utilizing pictures. One year I made a collage of all the grandkids in an 8 by 10 picture frame, which was before we all had kids. Yes I’ve done the calendars with pictures as well so she could enjoy a different grandchild every month. So far she’s enjoyed a scrapbook of the family the most. The scrapbook consisted of a page that each famly member created about them, I collected the pages, put them in birth order, added a famliy tree page in the front, and pages in the back that listed birthdays and anniversaries. From what she has said she looks at it often and enjoys is all over again every time.
Like I said I use pictures a lot as gifts. We get our family picture professionally done every year and I justify the cost by also having some printed for Christmas gifts. This way I kill two birds with one stone. Nice pictures for myself and Christmas gifts for the family. Oh and usually this pictures are used in the Christmas cards too so I guess I should say 3 birds with one stone.
When trying to come up with a unique idea I also pay attention to what the person enjoys as hobbies. For instance my Grandparents also like to gamble, and it was something they enjoyed doing together. So with that in mind a few Christmas ago, I gave them a money tree. Yes, that’s right a money tree. I bought a woodsy tree and tied $1 bills all over it so they could use them in the slots at the casino.
So I’ll leave you with this thought. Yes it is hard to come up with gifts for those we love, but if you use a little imagination and you like to be crafty then you can always come up with something. Plus the old farts love pictures so they can show them off to their friends.

Thanks Sherry for this post. I always have a rough time with the in-laws gifting. Great thoughtful ideas. I dig your site.

Sherry, what wonderful ideas! You have given me some good ones! I have done some photo collages (just this year), but you have given me even additional photo ideas. Thanks!
This year I made something handmade for my sister-in-law. The other day she told me on the phone that she had painted her bedroom pink and green, alternating the walls! So I made her a star for her bedroom door. I figured she’s a star, and it’s her dressing room, so she may as well put it on her door to her room and feel like a star! Keep in mind she’s an adult, now. Well the star was made out of wood and foam, and was pink with green glittery glue, and moondust colored sparkles, with a touch of blue swirls, LOL. I’m sending it to her as one of her Christmas presents, and I’m hoping she’ll laugh and feel special and love it. She’s a big kid just like me!
oh, forgot to mention, sherry, you are on my blogroll, in the sidebar of my Sometimes I Think Blog.
